Thankful for Creation

In the United States, it’s once again the time of year when we gather around a veritable feast, enjoy (or endure) conversation with family and fall asleep in front of a football game. In recent years, Thanksgiving and the concept of colonizing the states and the subsequent effects on the native populations has come under increasing fire, or at least scrutiny, in the name of political posturing and social justice. Those who do so are overlooking the larger picture. Thanksgiving is about being thankful for the good things in life. It’s about reflecting on the past twelve months and seeking those times when we have been blessed beyond what we deserve – which is true for every blessing, come to think of it. While food and football are traditions, the act of reflecting on the positive aspects in life require neither, and is probably healthier than both!

Awakening the Force: Star Wars TOR

SWTORIn the last episode of Burton and Scrooge, resident “scrooge” Brian was talking about getting back into Star Wars: The Old Republic now that the latest expansion has dropped. I’ve played SWTOR very briefly in the past as a free-to-play player, and enjoyed it quite a bit. My frustration with the game was purely technical, as every 2nd time I booted the game launcher, it would go through a “reorganizing data” phase which lasted upwards of three hours. I tried a few Internet fixes, none of which worked, and eventually decided that a free game that only worked 50% of the time was not as appealing as other options. It’s an unfortunate situation when you’ve got a great game, but you can’t get out of your own way to be able to deliver it to a potential customer!

My Podcast Playlist

MicrophoneI listen to a lot of podcasts. For the last several years, my sanity during the morning and evening commutes has been maintained by a trusty list of shows that are currently of interest. Recently it occurred to me that I’ve never actually posted about the shows that I enjoy, which seems odd considering that I’m such a proponent of word-of-mouth advertising for the medium! First of all, I do almost all of my listening on a mobile device, my Samsung Galaxy S5 using Shifty Jelly’s Pocketcast app. I think I paid $3.99 for the app, but since I’ve already paid, I’m having trouble determining if that price is still accurate (simply shows as “installed” in the Google Play store page). At any rate, it was a small price to pay for an app that does exactly what I need with suitable customization that I literally use every single day.

Beyond Bossfights 21 – Does Gaming Affect Your Real Life?

In this episode, Draculetta joins me to talk about how video gaming has impacted our lives, how our lives impact the way we game, and the good and bad effects gaming can have on individuals. We also discuss obscure topics such as Judas Priest and the unfortunate heavy metal smear campaigns of the 1980’s. Sound weird? It is, a little.

The Great LOTRO Server Migration

ServersThe big news in LOTRO land is that 19 of the 29 servers will soon begin closing down, leaving only ten active servers in production. When the dust settles, 5 servers in the US and 5 servers in Europe will remain. Further clarifications in the official forums have indicated that Turbine desires to disrupt as few players as possible. This indicates that servers with the largest populations stand the best chance to survive. With further extrapolation, my original and home server of Windfola is directly in the crosshairs, and I’m still not sure how to feel about it.

Is Character Personalization Really That Important?

RocketI used to think that character personalization was really important to me. In my “first impressions” posts of various MMO’s on this site, I’ve constantly cited the character creation system as a plus or minus, depending on the depth of that system and the uniqueness of the end result. However, my recent dive into Marvel Heroes has me questioning how important this type of personalized character is to my enjoyment of a game.
